In an AP-NORC poll conducted in February, 38% of U.S. adults approved of how Biden was handling his job. Black adults are more likely than white and Hispanic adults to approve of Biden, but that approval has dropped in the three years since Biden took office. This is stuff that requires work,” Quentin Fulks, principal deputy campaign manager for the Biden campaign, said in an interview. Still, the Biden campaign and the broader Democratic Party are confronting their own struggles, despite their cash and organizational advantages. And in Nevada, Biden will continue promoting a new housing proposal that would offer a mortgage relief credit for first-time homebuyers and a seller's tax credit to encourage homeowners to offload their starter homes.

This unwillingness to contemplate a presidential vote for Trump isn’t confined to voters in the earliest states. I did not vote for Biden the last time; I don’t know that I could do it this time. Many of the voters who said they wouldn’t vote for Trump as the nominee aren’t Republicans at all. Voter turnout in primaries and caucuses, particularly ones that are relatively uncompetitive, is typically lower than it would be in a general election. —-AP VoteCast is a series of surveys conducted among 1,597 Republican caucus voters in Iowa, 1,989 New Hampshire voters who took part in the Republican primary and 2,466 Republican primary voters in South Carolina.

Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump speaks at a Get Out The Vote campaign rally held in Waterford Township, Mich on Saturday, Feb 17, 2024. Donald Trump has won the Michigan Republican presidential primary, NBC News projects. Tuesday's result shows the former president and clear GOP frontrunner once again defeating former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, Trump's last remaining primary rival. Trump went into the Michigan primary with momentum, having trounced Haley by double-digit margins in her home state of South Carolina just three days earlier. Trump is also battling two other criminal cases that center on his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Biden.

Others in the GOP field have attacked transgender participation in athletics and proposed nationwide bans on affirming care for transgender minors. Transgender-related issues have become perhaps the biggest rallying call to Christian conservatives, more than abortion rights or same-sex marriage. As an ethical matter, I think it’s gross,” said Tim Miller, a former Republican political operative who worked as communications director for former Florida Gov. Several people interviewed at a recent Trump rally argued children were being wrongly confronted with issues of gender identity. Both Trump and Nikki Haley, his last major rival heading into South Carolina's Republican primary this coming Saturday, have leaned into anti-transgender rhetoric.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The state of Maine's long-cherished reputation for political independence is being threatened by the nation's polarized politics, with more and more of its voters feeling pressured to take sides. So-called independents, or unenrolled voters, have gone from the state's largest voting bloc to trailing both major parties in just four years. Republicans, too, overtook unenrolled voters two years later. As of last month, a tally of active voters indicated there were 343,488 Democratic voters, 279,936 Republican voters and 273,298 unenrolled voters. In New Hampshire, more than 4-in-5 Haley voters said Trump would not be fit to serve again if convicted and that Biden had legitimately won. In that poll, two-thirds of Haley voters in Iowa said they would not vote for Trump in a general election; that number soared past three-fourths of her voters in New Hampshire. One key reason: fully 93% of all GOP-leaning voters said they disapproved of Biden’s performance as president. Biden Rolls Out Newly Aggressive Border Messaging

President Joe Biden is beta testing a new message on the campaign trail and in the White House. Biden’s response: Send the immigration bill to my desk to sign and I’ll shut down the border right now. The newly aggressive messaging is likely a necessary tone for an issue that’s overtaken the economy as the No. That's why you're seeing him try to talk and act tougher about border security. Crossings in recent weeks are down overall along the entire U.S. border, including areas without such a heavy security presence. The arrival of GOP governors to Eagle Pass rounds out a weekend that has kept the small border city of roughly 30,000 residents in an unwitting spotlight. The number of crossings in Eagle Pass has recently fallen to a few hundred a day. The GOP’s South Carolina primary won’t be held until Feb. 24. Arguing that voters of color should play a larger role in determining the Democratic presidential nominee, Biden championed a calendar beginning in South Carolina. South Carolina was also where Biden reversed his fortunes with a resounding victory during the 2020 Democratic primary after defeats in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. “I wouldn’t be here without the Democratic voters of South Carolina, and that’s a fact,” Biden said at the state's Democratic Party’s “First-in-the-Nation” celebration dinner last weekend. Biden's support among Black voters has waned considerably since he assembled his winning coalition four years ago. Lackluster turnout among Black voters in South Carolina’s primary could signal a broader dip in enthusiasm. He fought hard in state after state, even as the front-runner amassed a delegate advantage that would be virtually impossible to overcome. WASHINGTON (AP) — As he looks past the GOP primary and towards a likely general election rematch against President Joe Biden, Donald Trump will meet with members of the Teamsters Union in Washington Wednesday afternoon as he tries to cut into Biden's support. Trump is hoping to cut into that support as he casts himself as pro-worker and tries to exacerbate longstanding divisions between union leaders and rank-and-file members. Support for abortion rights drove women to the polls during the 2022 midterm elections, delivering Democrats unexpected success. Still, Democrats believe abortion will be a key motivator for base voters and help expand their coalition. Biden aides and allies point to recent elections that have overwhelmingly shown that, when voters can choose, they have chosen to safeguard abortion rights. According to an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll, among Democrats, nearly nine in 10 say abortion should generally be legal. But it also underscores a pervasive fear among Republican candidates and voters alike that vocalizing their desire to further restrict abortion rights in 2024 might be politically dangerous.

But the deal is already wobbling, as House Speaker Mike Johnson faces intense pressure from Trump and his House allies to demand more sweeping concessions from Democrats and the White House. “I do not think we should do a Border Deal, at all, unless we get EVERYTHING needed to shut down the INVASION of Millions & Millions of people,” Trump posted on social media this week. During Iowa's Republican caucuses last week, which Trump won, immigration was a top issue. Launched in 2018, AP VoteCast is a comprehensive survey of both voters and nonvoters that aims to tell the story behind the election results. For example, in the 2020 presidential election, AP VoteCast results showed that white men favored Donald Trump, while women with college degrees favored Joe Biden. Prior to the launch of AP VoteCast in 2018, the AP worked with other major news organizations to conduct Election Day exit polls. AP VoteCast results from the Iowa GOP caucuses will be available Monday night on the AP's caucus results homepage. A detailed description of the methodology used in AP VoteCast is also available.

Initial results from eight counties showed Trump with far more than half of the total votes counted as of 8:31 pm. In 2020, when Trump sought re-election, AP declared the former president the caucus winner at 8:25 p.m. In 2016, AP was not able to name Texas Sen. Ted Cruz the winner over Trump until 10:26 p.m. AP VoteCast found Trump had with sizable leads among both men and women, as well as every age group and geographic regions throughout the state. Polls showed that was a relatively weak group of backers for Trump in Iowa in 2016.
